Meet Finn: Our Gentle Comtois Giant with a Heart of Gold

Here at Northcote Heavy Horse Centre, every animal has a story — and Finn’s is one that touches the heart.

Finn is an 8-year-old Comtois draft horse who came to us in 2021, after being imported from France by a previous owner. At an impressive 16.2hh, with a striking golden coat and soft, kind eyes, he’s a truly beautiful horse — but behind his majestic appearance is a journey that reflects the very reason sanctuaries like ours exist.

A Hidden Challenge

Finn was originally put up for sale, but during a routine vetting, it was discovered that he had serious sight issues. He was later diagnosed with congenital cataracts in both eyes — a condition he has likely had since birth. Although he can still detect shadows and light, his vision is extremely limited. To look at him, you wouldn’t know. He moves with confidence, interacts lovingly with people, and has adapted incredibly well to his surroundings.

Despite his condition, Finn is thriving in our care. He adores spending time with visitors, listens intently to voices, and always knows when there’s a snack nearby! His gentle spirit and resilience have made him a favourite among our volunteers and supporters alike.

What is a Comtois Horse?

The Comtois is a historic French draft breed that originated in the Jura Mountains, near the Swiss border. These horses are renowned for their strength, agility, and good temperament — a combination that made them popular throughout history as cavalry mounts and agricultural workers.

Typically standing between 15 to 16.2 hands high, Comtois horses have strong, compact builds, powerful hindquarters, and a proud arched neck. Most are chestnut or golden bay in colour with a light, flaxen mane and tail — just like Finn.

Their calm and intelligent nature makes them not only excellent working animals but also incredibly gentle companions, especially in a sanctuary setting. Finn embodies all of these traits — he’s kind, sociable, and seems to understand his environment in ways that go beyond sight.

A Safe Haven for Animals with Nowhere Else to Go

Finn is one of many animals at our sanctuary who have additional needs. Some, like him, have medical conditions. Others have suffered neglect, abuse, or simply outlived their “usefulness” elsewhere.

We provide these animals with a permanent, loving home, where they are respected as individuals, not just seen for their breed or background. Our residents include horses, ponies, pigs, goats, alpacas, ferrets, birds of prey, and more — each one with a unique story and a place in our hearts.

Our sanctuary is completely volunteer-run and relies on donations from the public to continue operating. Every bag of feed, bale of hay, veterinary bill, and warm stable is made possible through the generosity of people who care.
