A Christmas Message of Thanks, Reflection & Hope

Bailey and Churchill Merry Christmas from Heavy Horse Centre

As we reach the end of another year and look ahead to the one to come, we want to take a moment to pause, reflect, and say a very heartfelt thank you.

Running an animal sanctuary is never easy — and this year, like many others, has brought its challenges. Rising costs, unpredictable weather, and the constant responsibility of caring for animals 365 days a year mean there is rarely a quiet moment. What carries us through, time and time again, is the incredible people who stand alongside us.

We are deeply grateful to our small but dedicated team of volunteers, whose commitment keeps the sanctuary running day in, day out. Winter work is hard — cold, muddy, physically demanding — yet it is some of the most vital care our animals receive. Every early start, every late finish, and every quiet moment of care makes a real difference, and we simply could not do this without you.

We would also like to give special thanks to Terena, our Centre Manager, whose devotion to the sanctuary and its animals spans over 25 years of 24/7 care. Her knowledge, compassion, and tireless commitment form the backbone of everything we do here. The responsibility she carries, often unseen, is immense — and without her dedication, this sanctuary would not be what it is today.

Alongside Terena is Geoff, whose role is just as vital. From caring for the animals to managing the ongoing building, repairs, and maintenance work that keeps the sanctuary safe and functional, his dedication underpins so much of what happens here.

Over the past few years, we have also had to adapt and rebuild in ways we never expected. Losing access to our previous yard was a huge challenge and could easily have stopped us in our tracks. Instead, through determination, hard work, and the support of the community, we have continued to move forward, making the centre better than ever before. We are incredibly proud of how the centre has adapted, grown, and continued to provide safe, consistent care for our animals despite the obstacles we’ve faced.

As many people enjoy time with friends and family on Christmas Day, Terena and Geoff will be here as they always are — caring for the animals, maintaining routines, and ensuring every horse and animal is safe, warm, and well looked after. We wo

uld ask our supporters to spare a thought for them on Christmas Day, and to remember the commitment and care that continues here even during the festive season.

To everyone who supports us — whether through donations, visits, volunteering, buying from our wish list, sharing our posts, or simply following our journey — thank you. Your kindness and continued support truly humbles us. It is because of you that we are able to keep going, even during the toughest times.

Looking ahead to the New Year, we know there are still challenges to face. The months ahead will require continued support, resilience, and teamwork. But we move forward with gratitude, determination, and hope — knowing we are not doing this alone.

From all of us here, and from every horse and animal in our care, we wish you a peaceful Christmas and a kind, hopeful New Year.

If you’d like to support the sanctuary as we move into the New Year, there are several ways you can help. Donations go directly towards the day-to-day care of our animals, while our Amazon Wish List allows you to send much-needed items straight to the sanctuary. We’re also always grateful for people who can give their time — whether regularly or occasionally — by volunteering with us in the year ahead. Every form of support, big or small, helps us continue the work we do.

💛🐴✨
